Two important paintings have been bought for Danny House.
The first is attributed to Sir Peter Lely (1618–1689) and is of George Goring III (1585–1663) and two of his daughters. He owned and lived at Danny. He was a comely favourite of James I, helped negotiate the marriage of Charles I to Henrietta Maria of France, became the Earl of Norwich, was besieged at Colchester and financially ruined by the Civil War.
He built himself a large house called Goring House where Buckingham Palace is now sited, and this painting would have hung in that house.
The second is a C17th copy of a painting by Anthony van Dyck (1599–1641) of George Goring IV (1608–1657) and his close friend the Earl of Newport.
Goring owned and lived at Danny and was a courtier and intrepid cavalry general in the Civil War. The original of this painting is in the Newport Museum in Rhode Island.
