For Marian and Michael, moving to Danny House was more than just a change of address; it was the start of a new chapter filled with comfort, community, and the freedom to truly enjoy retirement. The couple, who previously lived in Wales, had an active social life and were deeply involved in their church. However, the pandemic made them reassess what they wanted from their later years, and they realised they wanted a home that offered security, companionship, and a more relaxed way of living.
The journey to Danny House was not without its considerations. Initially, they explored other retirement communities, but these didn’t fit the bill for both Marian and Michael. When they first visited Danny House, Michael was intrigued but hesitant, worried that it might feel too isolated. Marian, however, saw its charm immediately. It wasn’t until they returned a couple of years later that everything clicked, and they knew it was the perfect place for both of them.
Now settled in, Marian and Michael are embracing all that Danny House has to offer. They appreciate the sense of freedom it provides—no longer needing to worry about household maintenance, grocery shopping, or meal preparation. “We haven’t turned the cooker on since we moved in,” Marian laughs. With three meals a day prepared by an excellent chef, they can enjoy delicious food without the hassle of cooking. “And if it’s your birthday, you even get to choose your own special meal,” Michael adds.
Beyond the exceptional dining experience, they love the diverse range of activities available. “There’s never a dull moment,” says Marian. Michael has joined the choir in the quaint village of Hurstpierpoint, and both of them take part in various activities, from bowls, also in Hurstpierpoint, to community events. They enjoy attending talks and performances held at Danny House, and frequently take part in outings to nearby attractions. “Richard, the owner, invites local organisations to host events at Danny House, so there’s always something interesting happening,” says Michael.

One of the aspects they love most is the stunning surroundings of Danny House. “It’s like living in a grand historic home you’d never expect to call your own,” says Michael. They take full advantage of the picturesque walks, the beautiful gardens, and the peaceful atmosphere that makes every day feel like a retreat. They also enjoy visiting the nearby pubs, cafés, and shops in the village, as well as exploring local garden centres and historic sites. “We didn’t expect there to be so much to do so close to home,” Marian admits. “We’ve been pleasantly surprised by how much there is to explore right on our doorstep.” They were also pleasantly surprised by how well-connected the area is. The surrounding villages provide everything they need, while Brighton is just a short journey away for a wider range of amenities, and Gatwick Airport is only a 20-minute drive, making travel convenient.
For Marian and Michael, Danny House is more than just a residence—it’s a place where they can relax, socialise, and enjoy their retirement to the fullest. “It’s like being on a cruise that never moves,” Michael jokes. “Except here, we can step outside and be surrounded by history, nature, and wonderful company.” They have found that despite its rural setting, their lives remain full of activity, adventure, and new friendships, making Danny House the perfect home for their golden years.
